Background

If your server or computer does not connect to the UCT network, or is used at home, then you fall outside of the centrally-managed McAfee VirusScan solution and you will need to manually install McAfee VirusScan. Once you have installed the software, you will need to download and install the SuperDAT (sdat) file on a daily basis to ensure that the virus definition files on your computer are kept up-to-date. See: How to keep your Home version updated.

The McAfee site licence allows UCT staff and registered students to install the VirusScan software on their Home computer for a two-year period. CDs containing the software may be borrowed from ICTS, Computer Science building, Upper Campus. You will need to bring your staff/student card with you. The software can also be downloaded from the ICTS Downloads page. In order to comply with our licence agreements, you will be prompted to log in using your username and password before you can download these files from the ICTS website.

If circumstances change and you are either no longer employed by UCT or are no longer registered as a student, you must remove McAfee VirusScan from your Home PC. Failure to do so results in the home version being an illegal copy of the software.

How to keep your Home version updated

Internet Access at home
You need Internet access in order to keep your home copy of McAfee VirusScan up-to-date. The AutoUpdate feature will ensure that you have the latest version of the SuperDat (sdat) file by collecting and installing the latest sdat####.exe file from the Network Associates ftp site.

No Internet Access at home
If you do not have Internet access at home, you will need to update your SuperDAT (sdat) file on a daily basis from the McAfee website as McAfee have changed the format in which we receive our updates on campus. The updates that we receive are geared towards centralised administration and are intended for use only on computers managed by the ePO, i.e. computers that are connected to the UCT network and using the McAfee ePO Agent. As a home user, it is your responsibility to update your own virus definitions.
