The 7200 series router fails to boot from Flash disk

Solution # K11070934
Title The 7200 series router fails to boot from Flash disk
Core Issue The console displays the %SYS-6-READ_BOOTFILE_FAIL error message during the boot. After timing out, the router drops into boot mode.
Resolution To resolve this issue, perform these steps:
  1. Check the Network Processing Engine (NPE) version. The Flash disk is only supported as the primary boot media for NPE-225, NPE-300 (EOS), NPE-400 and Network Service Engine-1 (NSE-1) based systems.

Use the Flash disk side by side with linear Flash memory for NPE-200 and earlier systems. Although it is possible to boot from a Flash disk, a bootable image must be maintained on a linear Flash memory card. This is to ensure that the router is bootable if the bootflash software image becomes unusable.

  1. Verify that the Cisco IOS® Software version is compatible. The Flash disk is only supported on systems with the Cisco IOS Software filesystem feature. In general, the Flash disk functionality requires Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0 or later.

Note: For the Cisco 7200 series router with an I/O controller card, the minimum supported releases for the Flash disk are 12.0(3)T, 12.0(5)S, 12.1(1)E, 12.1(1)T, 12.1(1), 12.2(1) and 12.2(4)B.
